INTEGRATIVE PRACTICE

Journaling: Self-Sabotage

When we don’t allow ourselves to judge, but instead become curious about our actions and behaviors, our feelings, our thoughts, and beliefs, we open up so much space for self-inquiry, which can bring about personal and emotional transformation. When we allow ourselves to be open to the possibility of a deeper why behind the things we do, rather than jumping to a place of self-hatred, we can learn from our triggers and behaviors, rather than harming ourselves for them. We simply can’t shame our way to happiness. It’s a broken model that most of the world operates under, and it’s time to work with our behaviors, not against them.

In your journal, choose three instances in the past when you’ve sabotaged your success, whether it was in a relationship, a health journey, or a new career. For each instance, answer the following questions:

When I “throw in the towel” and self-sabotage, what is the story I am making up in my head? How do I feel about myself when this happens?

What stops me from forgiving myself for the error and moving on?

What internal needs was I trying to meet by starting this healing journey?

What were my self-judgments?

When we move into a place of curiosity, we can understand the why of our behaviors and learn and grow from them.
